French-speaking Switzerland

French-speaking Switzerland accounts for a significant share of moving activity in Switzerland, driven by the dynamism of the Lake Geneva region and high residential mobility.

Geneva (GE)

The most active and most expensive market in French-speaking Switzerland. With over 500,000 inhabitants, high urban density and a strong international presence (UN, ICRC, WHO), Geneva experiences a constant flow of moves. Regulated parking, older buildings without lifts and demanding property managers: a local professional mover is essential.

Vaud (VD)

The second-largest French-speaking market, the Canton of Vaud stretches from Lausanne to Montreux, from Nyon to Yverdon. The Lake Geneva arc concentrates most of the demand, with rates in the upper Swiss average. The university cities of Lausanne and Yverdon also generate significant student turnover at the beginning and end of the academic year.

Valais (VS)

Valais presents particular logistical challenges: mountain roads, narrow valleys and longer distances between localities. The main towns — Sion, Sierre, Martigny, Monthey — are well served, but some Alpine resorts require a mover who knows the terrain. Rates are competitive compared to the Lake Geneva region.

Fribourg (FR)

A bilingual canton at the crossroads of French-speaking and German-speaking Switzerland, Fribourg offers some of the most competitive rates in the region. The city of Fribourg, Bulle and Morat are the main moving hubs. Ideally positioned between Bern and Lausanne.

Neuchatel (NE)

The Canton of Neuchatel covers two main centres: the city of Neuchatel on the lakeside and La Chaux-de-Fonds in the mountains. The historic watchmaking industry and the university generate regular residential mobility. Moderate rates and good mover availability.

Jura (JU)

Switzerland’s youngest canton (created in 1979), the Jura offers a rural setting with some of the lowest moving rates in French-speaking Switzerland. Delemont and Porrentruy are the main towns. Proximity to neighbouring France also generates cross-border moves.

German-speaking Switzerland

German-speaking Switzerland represents the country’s largest moving market, with major urban centres such as Zurich, Bern and Basel.

Zurich (ZH)

Switzerland’s largest canton by population (over 1.5 million inhabitants). Zurich is a highly competitive market with many movers, allowing you to negotiate rates. Strong demand in the city of Zurich, Winterthur and the lake region. Blue zones are ubiquitous in the city.

Bern (BE)

The federal capital and its surroundings offer a balanced market with moderate rates. The canton is vast, stretching from Biel to Thun, from the Bernese Oberland to the Emmental. Bern’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sometimes has difficult access for moving trucks.

Basel-Stadt (BS)

A trinational crossroads (Switzerland, France, Germany), Basel is a dynamic market with many cross-border moves. The pharmaceutical and chemical industry (Roche, Novartis) generates high mobility among international executives. A dense city with parking constraints.

Basel-Landschaft (BL)

The half-canton of Basel-Landschaft surrounds Basel-Stadt and offers more spacious and affordable residential options. Liestal, Allschwil, Reinach and Binningen are the main municipalities. Rates are slightly lower than Basel-Stadt.

Aargau (AG)

A large canton situated between Zurich, Bern and Basel, Aargau is a transit territory with cities such as Baden, Aarau and Wettingen. Good motorway connections, competitive rates and movers available year-round.

Lucerne (LU)

The capital of Central Switzerland, Lucerne combines tourist charm with economic dynamism. The canton covers varied terrain, from the lakeside city to rural communities in the hinterland. Rates are in the Swiss average.

St. Gallen (SG)

The main centre of Eastern Switzerland, the Canton of St. Gallen stretches from Lake Constance to the Alps. A diverse market with moderate rates. The city of St. Gallen and Rapperswil-Jona account for most of the demand.

Solothurn (SO)

A canton situated between Bern and Basel, Solothurn offers a pleasant living environment with affordable moving rates. The towns of Solothurn and Olten are well connected to the rail and motorway network.

Thurgau (TG)

An Eastern Swiss canton bordering Lake Constance, Thurgau offers competitive rates and a good quality of life. Frauenfeld and Kreuzlingen are the main towns. Close to Germany for cross-border moves.

Zug (ZG)

A financial centre known for its favourable tax regime, Zug attracts many executives and businesses. Despite its small size, the canton experiences high residential mobility. Rates are in the upper average due to the high cost of living.

Schaffhausen (SH)

Switzerland’s most northerly canton, Schaffhausen is almost entirely surrounded by Germany. A modest-sized market with competitive rates and good mover availability. Many cross-border moves.

Schwyz (SZ)

A founding canton of the Swiss Confederation, Schwyz lies at the heart of Central Switzerland. Mountainous terrain with attractive localities on the shores of Lake Zurich and Lake Lucerne. Moderate rates.

Appenzell Ausserrhoden (AR)

A small Eastern Swiss canton, Appenzell Ausserrhoden offers a rural and hilly setting with some of the lowest moving rates in German-speaking Switzerland. Herisau is the cantonal capital.

Appenzell Innerrhoden (AI)

Switzerland’s smallest canton by population, Appenzell Innerrhoden retains an authentic rural character. A niche market with few local movers, but professionals from the St. Gallen region cover this territory.

Nidwalden (NW)

A half-canton of Central Switzerland, at the foot of Pilatus and on the shores of Lake Lucerne. Stans is the cantonal capital. An Alpine setting with sometimes demanding access. Moderate rates.

Obwalden (OW)

A neighbouring half-canton to Nidwalden, Obwalden stretches from Sarnen to the Brunig Pass. Mountainous terrain with pass roads, requiring movers accustomed to Alpine conditions.

Uri (UR)

An Alpine canton traversed by the Gotthard axis, Uri is a mountain territory with Altdorf as its capital. Moves often require logistics adapted to mountain roads and winter conditions.

Glarus (GL)

An Eastern Swiss canton nestled in an Alpine valley, Glarus offers a preserved natural setting. A small market with affordable rates. Movers from the Zurich and St. Gallen regions regularly serve this area.

Italian-speaking Switzerland

Ticino (TI)

Switzerland’s only entirely Italian-speaking canton, Ticino attracts many retirees and workers thanks to its Mediterranean climate and favourable tax regime. The main towns — Lugano, Bellinzona, Locarno, Mendrisio — are well served. The link with the rest of Switzerland runs through the Gotthard Tunnel. Pay attention to distances and topography for moves from German-speaking or French-speaking Switzerland.

Trilingual canton

Graubunden (GR)

Switzerland’s largest canton by area, Graubunden is a trilingual territory (German, Romansh, Italian) with a pronounced Alpine geography. Chur is the cantonal capital. The numerous valleys and mountain resorts (Davos, St. Moritz, Lenzerheide) require movers experienced in mountainous terrain. Significant distances and pass roads must be factored into planning.
