Moving to Val-de-Ruz is nothing like moving in a city: since 2013 the municipality has brought together fifteen former communes in an agricultural valley between Neuchâtel and La Chaux-de-Fonds. Distances between villages, country access roads and cold, snowy winters all affect how you organise the move. To move to Val-de-Ruz smoothly, it is best to prepare access, timing and paperwork before approaching a removal company in Val-de-Ruz.

Val-de-Ruz: a municipality of villages, seen from a moving perspective

Val-de-Ruz was created by merging fifteen communes. Cernier, Fontainemelon, Dombresson, Chézard-Saint-Martin and Coffrane are among them, along with other villages in the valley. For a move, this means there is no single centre: each village has its own character, its own streets and its own access. Always give the exact village in your request, not just “Val-de-Ruz”.

The housing stock is varied, as in many agricultural valleys: village houses, converted farmhouses, villas and small apartment blocks. Each type of home raises its own questions. A village house may have narrow stairs or a vaulted cellar, a recent building a lift that has to be booked, a villa a garden or a slope to cross with the boxes.

This variety is why a prior visit is useful for large volumes: the mover sees the real access, the stairs and the bulky items, and the quote fits your situation more closely.

Access, parking and floors in Val-de-Ruz

In a valley, village roads are often narrower than in a built-up area, and farmyards or old lanes are not always suitable for a large lorry. Tell the movers in advance the approximate width of the access, and whether there is a slope, a tight bend or a gate. The removal company will then choose a suitable vehicle, or even a small truck and several shuttle trips.

The carrying distance between the lorry and the door matters as much as the number of floors. If the lorry cannot get close, each piece of furniture travels further, which lengthens the day and affects the quote. In a house without a lift or with a winding staircase, a furniture lift going through a window or a balcony can avoid risky manoeuvres.

In winter, snow and ice change things: clear the access if you can, have salt ready and leave some slack in the schedule. If the lorry or a skip has to occupy the public road, a permit from the commune or the police may be required. Ask a few days or weeks before the date, as the lead time varies.

When to move to Val-de-Ruz: lease dates, season and weather

Notice to terminate a residential lease must be given in writing, with three months’ notice for the date set by local custom or, failing that, for the end of a three-month lease period, unless your contract provides for longer (art. 266c and 266l of the Swiss Code of Obligations, CO). Customary dates differ by canton and commune: check your lease before setting the date. Around these dates removal companies are in high demand, so it pays to request quotes early.

If you have to leave before the termination date, art. 264 CO lets you be released by proposing a solvent replacement tenant willing to take over the lease on the same terms. For a family home, the spouse or partner must expressly consent to the termination (art. 266m and 266n CO).

As for the season, winters in the valley are cold and snowy: slippery roads, short days, access to clear. A mid-winter move is still possible, but it needs more margin and preparation, as explained in the guide to moving in winter. The shoulder seasons generally offer easier conditions, but they are also busy periods.

Paperwork in Val-de-Ruz: residents’ registration office, address, move-out inspection

Every move must be reported to the residents’ registration office (contrôle des habitants): your departure from the old commune and your arrival in the new one, within the period set by the canton. In many communes, you can report online through eMoving (eUmzugCH). The guide to registering with the commune explains the procedure.

Then think about changing your address: bank, insurers, employer, subscriptions, providers. For your old home, plan the cleaning, then the move-out inspection (état des lieux) with the letting agency (régie) or the landlord. For the new one, the rental deposit may not exceed three months’ rent for a dwelling (art. 257e CO) and is paid into a blocked account in your name.

If you are arriving from abroad or leaving for France, additional formalities apply: customs for transported goods, a residence permit depending on your situation. Check with the relevant authorities before the date.

Useful services for a move to Val-de-Ruz

Residential moving

For an apartment, a village house or a villa, residential moving covers loading, transport and delivery. Give the village, the floors and the access so that removal companies in the region can assess the work properly.

Furniture lift

When the staircase is narrow or the furniture is bulky, a furniture lift takes the loads up or down on the outside of the building. It needs a stable spot for the vehicle, which may require a permit to occupy the public road.

Packing and unpacking

Packing and unpacking takes the strain off busy weeks, especially for crockery, frames and fragile items. Country journeys and sometimes slippery roads call for good wedging.

Storage

If your new home is not ready or you are reducing your living space, storage lets you keep your belongings for as long as needed.

End-of-lease cleaning

End-of-lease cleaning prepares the handover of the home and the move-out inspection. Check what your lease and the letting agency expect.

House clearance

A converted farmhouse, a cellar or a full attic: house clearance saves you from transporting what you no longer need.
