A move to Puidoux needs to be planned with the terrain in mind: the commune stretches between Lavaux and the Jorat, from the vineyards to Lake Bret, with villages and open countryside. To move to Puidoux without unpleasant surprises, it is best to plan ahead for access, slopes and paperwork. The simplest way is to describe your move online: professional removal companies in the region will contact you with a free, no-obligation quote.

Puidoux, between vineyards, villages and Lake Bret

Puidoux lies between two very different landscapes: the Lavaux slopes, facing the vineyards, and the higher, more agricultural Jorat. In between, the commune has villages and countryside, reaching as far as the shores of Lake Bret. This geography produces a varied mix of housing, and each area raises its own questions when you move.

In the villages you will mostly find village houses, sometimes old, with narrow entrances, internal staircases and modest-sized rooms. On the outskirts and in the countryside, villas and detached houses dominate: larger volumes, but also cellars, garages and outbuildings to empty or fill. Apartment blocks are less typical of the area, which changes the logistics compared with a city move.

Before booking a date, take stock of the type of home you are leaving and the one you are moving into. Going from a villa to an apartment, or the other way round, changes the volume to transport, the number of people needed and the handling equipment.

Access, slopes and parking in Puidoux

Steep roads are the first particularity of a move in Puidoux. A removal lorry is heavy and long: uphill or downhill, some village roads or country lanes may limit its size or force it to park further from the home. Mention this as soon as you make your request, together with the exact address, so that removal companies in the region can plan the right vehicle, or even a prior site visit.

Carrying distance matters a great deal. If the lorry cannot get close to the door, furniture and boxes have to be carried over a longer distance, which lengthens the job. Also state any stairs, outdoor and indoor, the presence of a lift if there is one, and the width of corridors and doors. In a village house, a narrow or winding staircase can stop a sofa or a wardrobe from getting through in one piece.

For bulky or fragile furniture, a furniture lift can avoid the stairs by going through a window or a balcony. It does, however, need space to set up and firm ground, which is worth checking on sloping land.

If the lorry or furniture lift has to occupy the public highway, prior authorisation from the commune or the police may be required. Find out a few days, or even a few weeks, before the planned date. Our guide to the parking permit for moving day explains the procedure. In winter, also bear in mind snow and ice, more likely in the heights of the Jorat: they slow down manoeuvres and may justify some leeway in your schedule.

When to move to Puidoux: lease dates and seasons

A tenant may terminate their lease by giving three months’ notice for the date set by local custom or, failing that, for the end of a three-month lease period, unless the contract provides for longer (art. 266c of the Swiss Code of Obligations, CO). Customary moving dates vary by canton and commune: check your lease and local custom before settling on a date. Notice must be given in writing (art. 266l CO). For more details, see the guide to moving dates in Switzerland and the one on terminating a lease in Switzerland.

The periods around the customary moving dates are the busiest: removal companies are in high demand, so it is best to request your quote early. If you are flexible, a date in the middle of the month or outside the usual dates often leaves more choice.

As for the seasons, summer offers long days and clear roads, but the heat makes carrying more tiring. In winter, snow and ice can make access to the higher parts of the commune more difficult. Spring and autumn are often a good compromise, especially as the region’s farming and wine-growing calendar can bring traffic to some minor roads.

Paperwork for your move to Puidoux

Every move must be reported to the residents’ registration office (contrôle des habitants): departure in the former commune, arrival in the new one, within the period set by the canton. In many communes, the notification can be made online via eMoving (eUmzugCH). See the guide to registering with the commune to prepare your documents.

Remember also to give your new address to your employer, insurers, bank, and energy and telecoms providers, and to arrange mail forwarding.

For the home you are leaving, the move-out inspection (état des lieux) determines the handover: a thorough clean avoids disputes. If you leave before the lease ends, you can be released by putting forward a solvent replacement tenant willing to take over the lease on the same terms (art. 264 CO). If the home is the family residence, termination by a married tenant or one in a registered partnership requires the express consent of the spouse or partner (art. 266m and 266n CO).

In the new home, the rental deposit may not exceed three months’ rent (art. 257e CO) and is placed in a blocked account in the tenant’s name.

If you are arriving from abroad or leaving for France, customs and the residence permit are added to the list: check with the competent authorities before you leave.

Useful services for moving to Puidoux

Residential moving

For an apartment, a village house or a villa, residential moving covers loading, transport and unloading. State the floors, access and volume to obtain comparable quotes.

Furniture lift

In houses with a narrow staircase or on sloping land, a furniture lift can make it easier to move bulky items. Mention it in your request so that the removal companies can assess where it could be positioned.

Packing and unpacking

With winding roads, crockery and fragile items deserve good wedging. Packing and unpacking can be entrusted to professionals, which saves time on the day.

Storage

Between two homes, or if the new one is smaller, storage lets you keep part of your belongings for a few weeks or longer.

End-of-lease cleaning

For the move-out inspection, end-of-lease cleaning helps you hand the home back in the expected condition and limits disputes.

House clearance

A cellar, a garage or a villa outbuilding is often emptied before a departure. House clearance saves you from transporting what you no longer need.
