Moving to La Tène has one particularity: the commune brings together two former villages, Marin-Epagnier and Thielle-Wavre, which merged in 2009 at the end of Lake Neuchâtel. Depending on which area you are leaving, access, the type of housing and the preparation required are not the same. To move to La Tène without unpleasant surprises, it is best to describe your situation precisely: a removal company from the region can then draw up a free quote tailored to you.

La Tène from a moving perspective: two former villages, one territory

La Tène was created by the merger of Marin-Epagnier and Thielle-Wavre in 2009. It lies at the end of Lake Neuchâtel and gave its name to the La Tène archaeological site, which designates a period of the Iron Age. For a move, this history has a very simple consequence: the commune has no single centre, but several areas, each with its own character.

You will generally find a mix of housing types: rental apartment buildings, detached houses, villas and, in the older parts of the villages, more compact buildings. Each type raises its own questions: an apartment building means a lift, stairs and a shared stairwell; a house or villa usually means a carrying distance between the lorry and the front door, and sometimes a garden to cross.

Before setting a date, work out which of these cases applies to your current and your new home. It is the first piece of information removal companies will ask for.

Access, parking and floors in La Tène: what to plan for

Lakeshores and sloping vineyards are characteristic of the canton of Neuchâtel, so depending on the address you may be on flat ground or on a sloping street. A slope does not show up on a site plan, but it matters to a loaded lorry as much as to the movers. Mention it in your request.

A few practical points to check at both ends:

  • Lorry size: an old lane or a narrow track may require a smaller vehicle, and therefore more trips.
  • Carrying distance: if the lorry cannot stop in front of the entrance, each piece of furniture has further to travel, which affects both the duration and the quote.
  • Floors and lift: state the floor, whether there is a lift and how big it is. A sofa or wardrobe does not always fit in a narrow stairwell.
  • Furniture lift: when the stairs are too narrow, a furniture lift allows items to go through a window or balcony.
  • Snow and ice: in winter, a slippery access slows down loading. Allow a little extra time if you are moving in that season.

If the lorry, a furniture lift or a skip has to occupy the public road, prior authorisation from the commune or the police may be required. Find out a few days, or even a few weeks, in advance, and read the guide on the parking permit for moving day.

When to move to La Tène: lease dates, season and weather

Tenants can terminate their lease by giving three months’ notice for the date set by local custom or, failing that, for the end of a three-month lease period (art. 266c of the Swiss Code of Obligations, CO), unless the contract provides for a longer period. Customary dates vary by canton and commune, so check your lease and local custom. The guide on moving dates in Switzerland will help you find your way.

Notice must be given in writing (art. 266l CO). For the family home, termination by a married tenant or one in a registered partnership requires the express consent of the spouse or partner (art. 266m and 266n CO). If you need to leave before the end of the lease, you can be released by presenting a solvent replacement tenant willing to take over the lease on the same terms (art. 264 CO).

Around the usual lease dates, removal companies are in high demand: book early, especially if your date is fixed. As for the season, the canton has cold, snowy winters in its higher areas; by the lake the weather is generally milder, but rain and ice remain possible. Outside peak periods, you often have more flexibility on dates.

Administrative steps in La Tène: residents’ registration, lease and change of address

Every move must be reported to the residents’ registration office (contrôle des habitants): your departure in the former commune and your arrival in the new one, within the period set by the canton. In many communes, this can be done online via eMoving (eUmzugCH). The guide on registering with the commune explains the procedure.

Then remember to change your address with your bank, insurers, employer, subscriptions and the post office. For the home you are leaving, prepare the move-out inspection (état des lieux) and the cleaning so that you hand back the keys in good condition. For the new one, the rental deposit may not exceed three months’ rent for a dwelling (art. 257e CO) and is paid into a blocked account in your name.

The French border is close in the canton. If you are arriving from abroad or leaving for France, customs and residence permit formalities may apply: check with the relevant authorities before moving day.

Useful services for your move to La Tène

Residential moving

Whether you are leaving an apartment or a villa, residential moving covers loading, transport and unloading. Specify access and floors for a realistic quote.

Furniture lift

When the stairs are narrow or the furniture is bulky, a furniture lift avoids difficult passages. It needs space to set up, so it may require authorisation to occupy the public road.

Packing and unpacking

Having your fragile items packed saves time and limits breakage. Packing and unpacking can easily be combined with transport.

End-of-lease cleaning

To hand the home back without worry at the move-out inspection, end-of-lease cleaning can take that step off your hands.

Storage

If your move-out and move-in dates do not coincide, storage lets you keep your belongings between two homes.

Furniture assembly and disassembly

A large piece of furniture fits more easily down the stairs when taken apart. Furniture assembly and disassembly can be organised together with the move.

Requesting a quote

  1. You describe your move online: departure and arrival addresses, volume, floors, desired date.
  2. Professional removal companies from the region contact you, possibly for an on-site visit to assess access.
  3. You compare the free quotes and remain free to choose, or not.

The cost varies with the volume, distance, floors and access, any furniture lift, packing and the date. To get started, simply request a quote.
