Moving to Gy has little in common with moving in the city of Geneva: here you will find village houses, fields and small country roads. To move to Gy without nasty surprises, you need to think about truck access, carrying distances and commune formalities. A removal company in Gy, or more broadly in the region, will be able to adapt the vehicle and the team to these particularities once your request has been passed on.

Gy: a left-bank village between fields and the border

Gy is a small rural commune on the left bank, at the eastern edge of the canton of Geneva, on the French border. The landscape is that of a village surrounded by fields, very different from the dense centre of the city of Geneva.

For a move, this means housing made up mostly of village houses, with what that implies: volumes that are often larger than in an apartment (cellar, attic, outbuildings, garden), furniture to bring down stairs that can be narrow or steep, and few lifts. If you are leaving a home of this type, remember to take stock of everything stored outside the house: tools, garden furniture, firewood, bicycles.

If you are arriving from the city, the contrast is clear: less traffic, but also fewer local services. Choosing a date and booking a removal company should therefore be planned a little further in advance.

Access, parking and carrying in Gy

In a village with small country roads, the first question is size. A large removal truck cannot get everywhere: a narrow road, a tight bend or a private access track may force you to park further away and carry boxes over some distance. Mention this as soon as you request a quote, because it changes the vehicle chosen, the duration of the job and therefore the cost.

A few points to check before the day itself:

  • the width and height available up to the door (hedges, branches, gates, low walls);
  • where the truck can actually park, and the distance to the entrance;
  • indoor and outdoor stairs, which matter as much as the number of floors;
  • the condition of the track in rain, mud or frost, especially if the access is not tarmacked.

If the truck has to occupy the public road, or if a furniture lift or a skip is needed, prior authorisation from the commune or the police may be required. Check with the commune a few days, or even a few weeks, before the date. Our guide to the parking permit for moving day explains the procedure.

When to move to Gy

The right time depends first on your lease. A tenant may terminate by observing a three-month notice period for the date set by local custom or, failing that, for the end of a three-month lease period, unless the contract provides for longer (art. 266c of the Swiss Code of Obligations, CO). Customary dates vary by canton and commune: check your lease and local custom. Notice must be given in writing (art. 266l CO) and, for the family home, the spouse or partner must expressly consent (art. 266m and 266n CO).

The periods around lease dates are in high demand: removal companies quickly become fully booked, so it is best to request a quote early. If you need to leave before the end of the lease, you can be released by proposing a solvent replacement tenant willing to take over the lease on the same terms (art. 264 CO). To find out more, read our guide to terminating a lease in Switzerland.

As for the season, the countryside imposes its own constraints: waterlogged ground in rainy periods, possible black ice on small roads in winter, and heat in midsummer for heavy carrying. Choosing a dry day makes truck access easier and protects your furniture.

Formalities when moving to Gy

Every move must be reported to the residents’ registration office (contrôle des habitants): departure in the old commune, arrival in the new one, within the period set by the canton. In many communes, the notification can be made online through eMoving (eUmzugCH). For your arrival, our guide to registering with the commune summarises the steps.

Remember also to:

  • give your new address (bank, insurers, employer, subscriptions);
  • arrange a move-out inspection (état des lieux) and hand back all the keys;
  • recover the rental deposit, capped at three months’ rent for a home (art. 257e CO) and held in a blocked account in your name.

The French border is very close: a cross-border move is common in the region. If you are arriving from abroad or leaving for France, customs and residence permit formalities are added. Find out from the competent authorities before the date, and mention it in your request.

Useful services for a move to Gy

Residential moving

Village house, apartment or studio: removal companies in the region adapt the team and the truck to your home. This is the basic formula for a residential move, with a site visit possible to assess access.

Furniture lift

When the stairs are narrow or a bulky piece of furniture will not fit, a furniture lift avoids carrying everything by hand. It needs space to set up and, sometimes, a permit to occupy the public road.

Packing and unpacking

In a house with a cellar and outbuildings, the volume to pack is often underestimated. Packing and unpacking saves time and protects crockery, frames and fragile items.

Furniture assembly and disassembly

Beds, wardrobes and modular kitchens are taken apart before departure and reassembled on arrival. Furniture assembly and disassembly is useful when corridors and stairs are narrow.

Storage

If your move-out and move-in dates do not coincide, storage lets you keep your belongings for as long as necessary.

End-of-lease cleaning

For the move-out inspection, end-of-lease cleaning saves you from losing time on the last day.
